Tourist Tax in Montenegro

Hope you are ready to dive into Balkan life and feel its flavor. But formal arrangements come first, especially if you are not planning to stay at a hotel. Any tourist visiting Montenegro must pay tourist tax. It may vary between 0.5 — 1 euro per day per person depending on the municipality. You must be registered within 24 hours after arrival.

Whether you rent an apartment through Airbnb, booking or any other service most probably you will have to pay the tax yourself. Fisrt, check this detail with the landlord. When you get the conformation as I said before =) ask your landlord for his full name, active phone number and correct address of the property you are staying at. Also ask for the address of the closest Tourist Organization or just google it. There are quite a few of them in each municipality. They will need your passport, address and may ask for the landlord`s number to make a call and check if you really stay at that place. For a long term stay like in my case (one year in Tivat), they asked for the rental agreement. However it depends on the town, authorities mood and moon phase  =)  On weekends Tourist Organisation working hours may vary and it can be closed on Sunday. In that case you have to come there on Monday and most probably they will forgive you as you could do nothing about it.

If you are not sure about your travelling plans, thinking of staying in a few towns and don`t how many days you will spend in each place you can pay for just a few days. Then you can pay again if decided to extend your stay in Tivat for example and book a photosession with me. When you move to another municipality like Budva or Hercig Novi you have to pay the tax there.

If your vacation became adventurous and you unexpectedly crossed the border, which is very easy in such a small country like Montenegro, while having your tax paid for some days ahead, unfortunately you will have to pay the tax again. Even if you come back the same day. Yes, I`m not joking.

When stay at the hotel usually you don`t have to worry about this tourist tax as they should take care of it. However extra charges may be applied to the original price. Check this information at the reception.

After you`re registered you will get a small pink paper — conformation of the registration. Keep it or all of them when have a few till the moment you leave the country as officer may ask for it when going through the passport control. In case you didn`t pay the tax you can be fined for 60-200 euros.
